Brief History: Red Sage known in Chinese medicine as Danshen has been a traditional Chinese remedy (TCM) for centuries, one of the oldest references to the medicinal uses of Danshen is in the ‘Shénnóng Běn Cǎo Jīng’ (The Divine Husbandman’s Classic of the Materia Medica) written in the 1st century A.D., where it was used as a remedy for heart problems and as a blood tonic. In Chinese medicine it formed part of the ‘Tianwang Buxin Dan’ formula alongside ginseng and cinnabar. It was described in the Rihuazi Bencao written by Master Sun-Rays in the 10th century, a rough translation says "Danshen nourishes the heart, reinforces the will power, unblocks the guan pulse, and cures goiter and pyrogenic infections."
