Description: Cumin is an annual herb native to Egypt which is now cultivated in southern Europe and Asia, it grows to a height of 20–30cm it has a slender, branched stem. The leaves pinnate sometimes bi-pinnate and 5–10cm in length, bluish-green in colour, with thin thread-like leaflets. The tiny flowers are white to pale pink in colour and are born on umbels approximately 3.5cm in diameter; each umbel contains 5-7 umbellets. The fruits are 4-5mm in length and contain a single seed which is oblong in shape and ridged along the length and yellowy-brown in colour.
Interesting Fact: Recipes which included cumin as an ingredient were found written on clay tablets which are over 4,000 years old, the spice was also written about in the bible. The ancient Greeks used it as a seasoning in much the same way that we use pepper today. The spice has also been used by ancient physicians to cure windiness and as a means of freshening the breath, and is the second most popular spice next to black pepper.

SUGGESTED USEOur organic ground cumin has a robust, earthy, peppery and warming flavour, and is ground for ease of use, and adds a tasty aromatic flavour to a range of dishes. It is a key ingredient in many spice blends and is used in Mexican, Thai, Mediterranean, Indian, North African and Latin American cuisines. Add to spicy tagines, chilli, curry, falafel, soups, stews and sprinkle on to roast chicken with a sprinkling of lemon juice and drizzle of honey for a roast with a difference. Cumin works well with vegetables to, sprinkle on to carrots, sweet potatoes and butter nut squash before roasting. Add to savoury rice dishes and hummus for a warming spicy twist.
Shelf life of two years provided that goods are stored in an airtight container in ambient conditions.
