The leaves are 5-8cm in length, and mid green in colour, they have short stems and are cordate with 3-5 lobes and toothed edges, they have a soft, velvety coating on both sides, and the underside of the leaf is paler green than the upper side. The flowers are hermaphrodite, and consist of 5 obovate almost heart shaped petals which are pale pink in colour and approximately 3cm in diameter.
Brief History: The Latin name ‘althaea’ is derived from the Greek word ‘althos’, which means ‘a remedy’, as such, this plant has been heralded for its healing properties for centuries, in the 12th century Hildegard of Binden recommended its use for easing coughs. Whilst the 16th century herbalist John Gerard says ‘The leaves be with good effect mixed with fomentations and poultices against pains of the sides’.
Fresh leaves can be chopped and added to salads, they can also be used to make tea. The leaves can also be used in cosmetic preparations to soften the skin. The stems can be used to make paper.
