Brief History: The name for caraway is said to come from the Gaelic word ‘Caroh’ meaning boat, due to the curved shape the seed takes. John Parkinson the 16th/17th century English herbalist, in his book ‘Theatrum Botanicum’ wrote of caraway, ‘The seed is much used to be put among baked fruit, or into cakes, etc., to give them relish. It is also made into comfits and taken for cold or wind in the body, which are also served to the table with fruit.

Ingredients: Ground fruit/seed of Carum carvi.

Allergy Advice: Caraway seeds contain a naturally occurring source of salicylates and are best avoided by people eating a salicylate free diet.

SUGGESTED USE

Ground caraway can be used in the same way as seeds, it is ideal to use when you want all the flavour that caraway can give to your dish but require a smooth texture. Add it to sweet and savoury breads, biscuits, scones and muffins. It can also be added to soups, casseroles and salads. Caraway works well with cheese and vegetables in particular cabbage and carrots. Sprinkle into pasta and noodles to be served with pork based dishes.
