Interesting Fact: Pepper has long been heralded as the ‘king’ of spices, during the sacking of Rome in 410 B.C. Alaric I, King of the Visigoths demanded 5,500lb’s of peppercorns as part of the ransom to set Rome free. In the middle-ages, pepper was used as currency to pay taxes and rent, which is where the saying ‘a peppercorn rent’ comes from in relation to ground rents and business sell offs. Peppercorns often featured in dowries and were left in wills for others to inherit. Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the 1st century A.D. understood the value of peppercorns and levied import duty on them to bring in additional revenue.
